El faro Investments SA embraces the responsibility of enhancing the local Nicaraguan community as a fundamental requirement to build a sustainable development. We have a vision of Los Suenos Island Resort being a town where cultural blend of the good aspects of Nicaraguan and North American social fabric exists. Our goal is to create a community. We are driven to improve the lives of the people that we affect. We look forward to intergating more and more, as the project moves ahead.
Since arriving in Leon in 2005, our company has:
- Hired Nicaraguans. We are committed to reducing the unemployment as much as possible.
- Graded the road to the local school at Company expense. The school bus can now more easily take the children to the school during the wet period. The salt & shrimp farming areas are much more accessible as a result of our roadwork.
- Committed to refurbishing four (4) public parks in the City of Leon. We have taken responsibility to clean and enhance these parks in Leon. We are very connected with Leon and what is good for Leon is good for Los Suenos.
- Built a new three (3) mile road, then gave this road to the community. We purchased a section of land on high ground, built a new road, then gave the road to the community. This solved an island access problem for many. There has not been a new road built in this area for many years. The community is grateful.
- Assisted in providing water to the local school. The water pipes were already laid but the water had never been provided. For the first time, the students are able to flush toilets and turn on the water tap.
- Assisted in the promotion for funds to pave the municipal road from the Pan America Highway to the coastal town of Salinas Grandes. In June 2007, the funds became available to the rural society and the roadwork is to go ahead. The schedule is planning in 2007 and paving in 2008. The road budget is $480,000 and the road will start at the Highway and go to Salines Grandes. The specifications for the road is interlocking concrete blocks. This will be a dramatic improvement to the entire region and will dramatically change the access to the island.
- Provided a gasoline account at our expense for government road equipment. We prepaid a diesel fuel account for road equipment to grade roads after the 2006 rainy season.
- Been respectful of Nicaraguan environmental process. We have patiently respected the environmental process and not developed our land till the proper authorities have reviewed such at their leisure. We are working to protect and promote the mangrove and other protected areas on our island.
- Supported school improvement programs. We are working with Coffee Bean Company of California, and have committed to contribute to adopting a classroom in Leon, and assisting with basic school supplies.
In cooperation with the Brotherhood of The Americas Our Lady of Roc-o, Split Bean Coffee of California has adopted a classroom at the Mariano Dubon Pre-school in Leon, Nicaragua.
As part of our community outreach efforts, we are helping the staff purchase school supplies for the children and have sent money to purchase books, and school supplies (coloring books, short story books, pencils, crayons and arts and crafts) to the children.
As soon as pictures of our donations at work are received, the pictures and letters will be posted on the Split Bean Coffee weblog at www.splitbeancoffee.com. If you are interested in donating, contact
